How do I know if I have Depression?

It can affect people in a wide variety of ways and produce a large number of different symptoms from feelings of sadness or hopelessness and a loss of interest in things you used to enjoy (including a loss of interest in sex) through to much more significant problems such as total withdrawal from society.

It can also lead to physical symptoms too, for example persistent tiredness, lack of ability to sleep and various feelings of aches and pains.

At worst (although this is actually rarer than most people believe) this problem can lead to such feelings of helplessness that suicide can seem like a viable option.

Only a medically trained specialist can diagnose the existence of Depression although the Psychology test available below may give you a reasonable indication that you should talk to your GP if you have a concern that you might be depressed.

Read About the MDI Depression Test here.

The principle techniques in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy recognise that there is a link between what we think, and what we feel  and by changing our thinking patterns we can produce different feelings.

Is Hypnotherapy suitable?

Hypnotherapy cannot cure depression, and in fact research also sheds doubt on the effectiveness of anti-depressants as a cure. Despite many claims that depression is caused by chemical imbalances inside a person brain, there has yet to be any empirical evidence to establish this as a fact and whilst depressed people do show low levels of serotonin, the only facts that are scientifically established are that depressed people show this difference in chemical make-up.

It is completely feasible that low serotonin levels are caused by feeling depressed, rather than the other way around.

Where hypnotherapy can be useful is in managing the symptoms associated with feeling down or depressed
